About DR. RATTAN SINGH JAGGI

Dr. Rattan Singh Jaggi was an eminent scholar of Punjabi and Hindi literature with Gurmat and Bhakti movement literature being his forte. He had devoted more than 60 years of his life working with wholehearted commitment for the cause of medieval literature. He had complete command on Punjabi, Hindi, English, Urdu, Persian and Sanskrit and had contributed marvellous, voluminous and highly acknowledged literary works in the shape of books, commentaries and encyclopaedias.

He had done complete commentary (teeka) of Shri Dasam Granth Sahib and Shri Guru Granth Sahib both in Hindi and Punjabi. He had also done detailed description of Guru Nanak Bani ( Guru Nanak Bani -Path ate Viyakhya ) both in Hindi and Punjabi. He had done transliteration of Tulsi Ramayan in Punjabi. He had also prepared an encyclopaedia of Shri Guru Granth Sahib and an encyclopedia of Sikhism.

Government of India had honoured him with “Padma Shri “award for his contribution in the field of Literature and Education. He was also conferred with the national award by Sahit Academy, New Delhi in addition to many other state awards, honours from various universities, literary and religious organisations.

Even at the age of 98, he pursued his scholarly work with undiminished zeal. With over 150 published works, his influence on Indian literature and Sikh theological studies remains unsurpassed.

A towering figure in Indian literary and spiritual thought, Dr. Rattan Singh Jaggi passed into eternity on 22 May 2025. He leaves behind not only a vast reservoir of scholarly treasures but also a legacy defined by humility, wisdom, and lifelong devotion to the world of letters.
